Statement of intent
I have been given the theme portrait for my photography project. When I was given the theme I got exited and was full of joy. why? because I really enjoy taking photos of my friends. I'm interested to see how the picture comes out on a professional camera rather then a phone camera.
The first thing I am going to do is research portrait photographers, one photographer I have in mind is Richard Avedon because his style is black and white which I admire. I have also found some different style of portrait photography such as traditional portrait, life style portrait, environmental portrait and candid. The shoots that I intend to do first will be taken outside for example in the style of street portrait . I will also take photographs in a studio setup to give a more professional look, using techniques such as finding angles that are not eye level, use lighting and finding different positions. I will try changing the colour of the photos potentially do some in black and white. I hope I can learn about the different backgrounds that would completely take my work to a next level. I also would love to learn how to do a flattering close up on someone's face.
To show progress through my work I will start by creating sport style portraits using studio set ups. I would like to go to a different location such as Salford Quays to capture my model in a more lifestyle and realistic way. Going out on location will mean I will have to use my camera setting skills, which I have gained so far for example white balance setting as there will be natural light and I will have to select the right one for my photo. Using the F stop in different ways to explore how I capture the background for example small f stop makes my model be in focus and the back ground out of focus and a large f stop captures my model and all the surroundings. I may use a fast shutter speed to capture my model kicking a ball or running this will help get a clear image of the movement. For a studio set up I will use a low f stop because it tends to be more darker in a studio and a low f stop will allow light to come into the camera. Using different back drop colours will make my photograph stand out especially if its bright back drop colours.
This project will help me gain skills such as taking photos of people it will help me capture body language and facial expressions. I will keep these skills as I will use them in the future for example family photos, photos of friends and photos of tourist attractions for when I go abroad.
I plan on going to Salford Quays in particular Media City. Media City to me is a good location because it has many beautiful buildings and bridges which will give a good back drop for my model and the colours that I will capture will be contrasting with the colours I will ask my model to wear. The location has lots of open space which means I will have more spaces to take photographs.
The project is called Portrait I aspire to take photos in a style that will show off the skills and new techniques I will gain thought my journey. I will do this by refining my work as I go for example showing my best and worst in my shoots this will indicate to me if i need to take more photographs or take them in a different way to gain a better finish. I will use photoshop to manipulate my work and I will display them in a final gallery of my Weebly page.

Richard Avedon
Context
This image above is called “Beekeeper” It has been taken by photographer Richard Avedon this picture is his most famous picture. It was made in 1981 8th May in California. Fischer always wanted to create a “Bee beard” that consists of a large swarm of bees followed by a queen bee that would come and lay on the person's neck. Fischer says “It's just something you do when nothing is going on”. In creating a “Bee beard” they had to use 1 or 2 day old bees because their stinger wouldn't have developed. They assembled at a tomato farm where Avedon had large sheets of white paper around the dark side of the room. When Fischer saw the bees he instantly knew they were adult bees he stated, “As soon as I saw the packages, I realized those were adults. It bothered me, but I figured Gary knew what he was doing. He told me not to worry”. He also said "In creating bee beards, They usually use 1 to 2 day old insects, which at that point they haven't developed stingers". Some of this information I have used from Richard Avedon’s famous beekeeper portrait – The story behind – Public Delivery.
Content
The picture came about when beekeeper Ron Fischer saw an advert which was asking people if they're willing to take a picture of bees on her or his body. This picture is a portrait picture with a person with a bee beard and a plain backdrop. At this time Fischer was unaware that the bees that would be on him were adults. He thought they would be baby bees so they would not harm him. By the models facial expressions I can tell he was uneasy with what was going on and was most likely nervous. I think the purpose of this photograph was to create a sense of insecurity and make the viewer feel uncomfortable and vulnerable. This is because people may have a phobia of insects which will cause them to feel uneasy looking at this picture. They may have the thought that there is a bee on them crawling their way up on their body. I think this picture is grainy due to it been taking in the early 1980s the cameras back then were not as good as they are now. I also think it could be grainy because it sets the mood for us and makes us even more comfortable. The way the model is looking at us looks like a cry for help or sympathy.
Composition
In this picture central focus is being used to catch the eyes of viewers. Contrasting in tone have also been used to make the picture come together and make it stand out. Fischer facial expressions are that he looks uncomfortable and looks like he doesn't want to be there. Also the main focus of this picture would be the bees on his face and the look on his face he looks like he's frowning but we don't know if it's a frown or just the wrinkles on his face. A high shutter speed would be used for this picture to catch the bees movement as they would have been flying everywhere. A high ISO was used because the theme of this picture is black and white and the picture is grainy and out of focus in places. The bees are mostly on his neck making their way up to his face which catches the eyes of viewers. I also think the f stop would be quite high approximately F/11 or higher the white balance used would be either tungsten or fluorescent because this shoot was taken inside. The background is plain white which makes us only focus on the model and the middle ground. However the bees depicted in the foreground on the mans body contrast with the stark white background. A light at a high angle would have bee used to get that shine on the models face.
Comment
I like this picture because I think it takes a lot of courage for a person to have bees all over them. This is good because it shows us that he is fearless. This will encourage people to take risk where they would be fearful. When I first looked at this picture I thought "What made him do that". As I dug deep researching it came to my amazement that the model was a beekeeper who volunteered to do this shoot. The picture is unique and interesting; it would make people wonder how Fischer felt during the shoot. The way the photographer has used minimal colour such as black and white could be something I would use in my work. This work is one of a kind because its not everyday that someone is willing to put bees all over their bodies for a shoot. The techniques that I would love to use in my work is black and white because I feel as if it stands out more if you use black and white.

Second Analysis
Content
In this photo I can see a girl with ginger hair and a purple flower. The girls eyes are glowing with blue/turquoise colour which is making the image stand out and would catch the eyes of viewers right away. There's also a reflection on the girl's face. The shadow of the flower is light grey with a hint of purple against her pale white skin. The original flower shape is out of focus however we can see the shape vividly reflected on her face. The shadow could have happened from direct sunlight. I don't think this picture has any meaning behind it. I feel like they just thought of the idea and did it. The model's hair gives texture to the image in contrast with her smooth freckled pale skin. Her bright blue eyes give connotations of the earth helping give a naturalistic look which the photographer I feel has captured. I can also see a hint of blue at the top of this picture, in the background which I think was edited to compliment the models eyes.
Composition
A low iso has been used in this picture. I know this because the picture is smooth and clear and you can see what's going on and it is not grainy. The flower in this picture is out of focus, but you can see the flower reflecting off the girl's face. A small F stop would have been used approximately F/4.5 or more. The rule of thirds is also being used in this photograph so you can only see half of the models face. To me the eye falls on the sweet spot of this picture. I think this is because the eye contains the strongest colour. The freckles on her face are very clear and bright and her lips are glossy and shiny. An eye level view has been used because the camera is held and shot at the same level with the eyes. The main colours being used in this image are blue/turquoise and purple. The image has been cropped so the background can't be seen. The foreground contains an out of focus flower then the midground shows the reflected flower on her face and the background is out of focus with some of the hair coming through clear creating the texture. When looking at this image my eye is drawn to the reflection on the model's face. I would class this as a leading line going from the middle of the image to the right hand corner. When taking a photograph using the rule of thirds is important because it allows the eye to navigate around a picture and to identify what is in the foreground, midground and background.
Connections
I like this image because it is a unique image and I like how the flower is out of focus, however you can see the reflection on her face. I may consider using this technique in my future shoots. I think what they could have done better is maybe added a little more to the picture like a little more colour or could have made it a bit grainy. If I was to use these techniques in my pictures I would use Photoshop to enhance the colours and maybe improve the way I use layering. I would use the brush tool to change the colours of my work and i would possibly use a filter to make my colours unique. Before I use photoshop I will make sure I have captured an image that shows reflection in the same style as the photographer. I would love to have my colours in my photographs compliment each other like they are in this photograph. This photo links to my work because I also tend to use bright colours in my work. I would also love to take close ups of my models so the viewers can get a good look at my models in detail.

Dorothea Lange
Context
Dorothea Lange took this photograph in 1936, while employed by the U.S. government’s Farm Security Administration (FSA) program, formed during the Great Depression to raise awareness of and provide aid to impoverished farmers. In Nipomo, California, Lange came across Florence Owens Thompson and her children in a camp filled with field workers whose livelihoods were devastated by the failure of the pea crops. Recalling her encounter with Thompson years later, she said, “I saw and approached the hungry and desperate mother, as if drawn by a magnet. I do not remember how I explained my presence or my camera to her, but I do remember she asked me no questions. I made five exposures, working closer and closer from the same direction.”1 One photograph from that shoot, now known as Migrant Mother, was widely circulated to magazines and newspapers and became a symbol of the plight of migrant farm workers during the Great Depression.
Content
I can see that this is a portrait image that's been zoomed in to the women's face. The photographer has used a lens to create a sweet spot, in this image the sweet spot would fall on to her eyes as its the first thing that catches our eyes. The image is not too dark or too bright it looks just about perfect. I feel as if there has been light used on the models face that makes it look so bright and clear. From the children's body language I can guess that they did not want to be in the image or they were camera shy. If you look closely the child on the right to me looks like he is dirty whereas the child on the left looks clean. I feel this way because the darkness on the Childs neck and hands looks like he is dirtier than the child on the left. From my research I know this picture was taken during the great depression. The great depression was a severe worldwide economic depression which took place in the 1930s. So from that I can infer that the mother and children probably had no food or no home or any personal belongings . As Lange described the situation she said " She and her children had been living on frozen vegetables from the field and wild birds the children caught. The pea crop had frozen; there was no work. Yet they could not move on, for she had just sold the tires from the car to buy food.” The photographer has captured the stress and worry on the mothers face. The mother and children clothing looks torn and ripped and it is covered with holes.
Composition
In this image Lange has used an aperture with a low depth of field which is the reason for the blurry background. I think the photographer has used an ISO of around 800 because the image is not too dark. The image is at eye level view to keep the audience engaged and give us a clear image of what we are looking at. The colours being used are dark, white and grey which sets the mood of sadness and despair which leaves the viewers feeling sympathetic for the mother and children. The colours black and white also compliment each other which makes this work even better. A fast shutter speed would have been used to capture the emotion on the mothers face. The rule of thirds has been used across the mothers face. there are leading lines shaped into triangle with the mothers face being in the centre. The Childs arm is also included in the triangle.
Connection
I really admire this work because I feel it has a deeper meaning behind it than just a random picture of a mother with her kids. I feel as if the colours that have been used for this image have been used to make the viewers feel sympathetic for the family and make people realise the struggles people face on a daily basis. I feel like I would want to also use black and white in my pictures because I feel that them colours are much deeper than any other colours and it really does make your work stand out. I think the message of this photo is to take care of everyone and treat each other the same no matter how rich or poor they are. I also think this image was taken to spread an awareness for people that suffered from the great depression and was sent out to the people in authority so they could help the less fortunate with their financially struggles at the time.

Basketball shoot
best |
worst |
This is my best image because you can see everything clearly. A low f stop would have been used to get the full image in focus A low ISO has also been used for the image to be in focus. The basketball has bright colours which makes it stand out and catches the eyes of viewers. There is a use of the rule of thirds with his body.
|
This is my worst image because the background is in focus and the image is blurry. The models face is not in the picture either.

Salford Quays shoot
Imperial war musuem
best |
worst |
This is my best picture because it is clear and you can see the models facial expressions. The composition of the buildings in the background works well. The colours that I have captured compliment each other for example the yellow and the red. My white balance was set to day and my F stop was low.
|
This is my worst image because the colour was very dark and you could hardly see my model. Also my white balance did not match with the weather as it looks like it was cloudy in the picture.
|
Salford Quays bridge shoot
best worst
This is my best image because I have used the rule of thirds because my model is on the left. You can also see the background which is in focus as well as the water. For this I have used a low F stop with a high Shutter speed.
|
This is my worst image because my model is not in focus and the picture is very dark. To fix this I could have made the F stop a little bit lower and set my shutter speed to a high shutter speed. I should of set my white balance to daylight so the image would come more bright.
|
Media city shoot
Best Worst
This is my best image because I have used the rule of thirds and my model is in the Centre ( The sweet spot). My background has a bright vibrant colour which goes with my models black jacket.
|
This is my worst picture because my model is not in focus and the picture was taken too fast. To fix this I would have took more time to take this picture and allow my model to get ready before I took it.
|
Lowry shoot
Best Worst
This is my best image because I have used the rule of thirds and my model is right in the Centre. For this I would of used a low F stop because there is a lot of light aswell as a high shutter speed.
|
This is my worst image because my model is not in focus because the picture is dark and it is hard to see him. To fix this I would need to allow more light in by setting a low F stop and a high shutter speed. I could also set the white balance to daylight.

Combination Edit
In this edit I have used my editing skills to combine my Double exposure edit with my glitch effect edit.
I want to develop this project further with the theme identity. I have chose this theme because I feel as if some people do not know their true identity and don't know who they really are. My aim is to show people the beauty of my culture as some people are not familiar with my culture. This project gives me the chance to talk about stuff that I am passionate about and which I know some knowledge on. With Eid and Ramadan coming up I have the perfect chance to show our traditional Pakistani clothing which consist of Shalwar kameez, Kurta, Jubbah for men and Lehenga for women . I would also like to show western culture because it also plays a big part In my life.
One thing I am really passionate about is mental health. This is mainly because I feel as if I have a voice to speak up for all the silent voices. I will try to show this in my work by doing work and research on different types of mental health's and try to help people feel more at ease in their situation through my work. To do this I will put hints and tips in my work almost like subliminal messages about mental health and what people go through. . I also want to show people what people may be going through on a day to day basis and spread awareness on mental health such as Anxiety, depression, bipolar and schizophrenia.
Another thing I may look at in this project is my religion. Religion plays a big part in my life as some of my characteristics come from my religion. From praying 5 times a day and fasting in Ramadan and trying to be the best Muslim and the best version of my self .Religion has helped me in my dark times and made me see better days. In the media Islam is portrayed as a evil religion which teaches violence but the word Islam literally means "peace" so for the media to brainwash people with the thought that it is a evil religion is morally wrong. Furthermore my goal is to show everyone the beauty of my religion and the beauty of the stuff it contains.
To begin this journey I will do research, mood board and a mind map to collaborate my idea and thoughts. Then I will look at photographers work who have worked in similar ideas and manipulate in their style. I will also edit my photos in photoshop to get the best possible outcome of my work and take it to a next level. I will also do 3 analysis on 3 different photographers where I take one of their images and explain it deep and depth detail. One photographer that I would love to imitate is Dean perks, this is because I feel as if his work has much a much deeper meaning than just a normal shoot I feel as if he leaves secret messages in his work that make people really think. I will also do my best and worse where I take one of my best photos from one of my shoots and my worse and explain why they're my best and worse.

Asian clothing
I have taken these pictures on my sisters wedding on my phone to showcase asian wedding wear.
Self portrait
For this shoot I have used the timer and placed the camera on a tripod on the camera to take images of myself.
BestThis is my best image because you can see myself clearly at central focal point. A studio light had been used over my head to ensure you can see me well and clear. An ISO of around 800 or so would have been used. To make this image better I could have maybe zoomed out a little more to maybe capture the full thobe.

My project theme was portrait. In this project we was able to choose our own photographers and do our research on them and take pictures in their style. I think this was a very exciting project as it was the first time I took pictures of other people on a professional camera. The skills that I gained in this project is Communication skills. This played a big factor in my work because I was the one that was directing my model on where to stand and what poses to do. Another skill that I had gained was editing. Editing took my work to a next level by doing some complex and simple edits. I really admired Richard Avedon and Dorthea Lange black and white theme pictures which inspired me to use black and white in my own work. The part I enjoyed the most was going out in different locations and taking shots around the school and around Salford quays. I also really loved edited my pictures because it was mostly me testing my own skills and doing it by myself than relaying on a teacher.
I have also had the chance to discover new camera settings that I had previously had never used before and playing around with my camera settings so I could find the best ones that would fit my photos. Another technique that I had learnt was to photoshop I think this was a great technique that I had learnt because before hand I had no knowledge on photoshop or even have to use it so it was interesting and fun editing my best pictures. I would love to further develop my photoshop work such as possibly doing more complex edits that would improve my grade.I would also love to develop my writing skills by using impressing vocab in my work that would also help me gain a higher grade in photography.
For research I had been inspired by Boohoo models and sport brands models. This inspired me because I really have a passion for fashion and doing work which is based around that really made the work more enjoyable for me.
